Reading instruction begins in earnest with the start of first grade. Spelling and handwriting are also key components of this process. While arithmetic manipulatives are used to introduce more abstract thinking, the mastery of math facts is an important emphasis. Hands-on and inquiry-based activities provide exciting and stimulating experiences with integrated science concepts. Family, parish, and community continue to be emphasized in developing social awareness.
Religion focuses on developing an understanding of the sacramental life of the Church. Second graders are prepared to participate in First Reconciliation, followed by preparation for First Communion.
They also participate in special classes throughout a given week in physical education, music, Spanish, art, computer, and visits to the library.
